White to Whole Wheat – Transition is Key!

Sometimes our Kids Eat Smart Clubs and our parents are reluctant to try whole wheat items with their kids. They figure the kids won’t eat it if it’s whole wheat and it may go to waste. What we usually encourage is to introduce the whole wheat slow and steady to get the kids use to the idea of choosing whole wheat more often.

Swap out some of that white for some whole wheat on any given morning and see how kids react. Do half whole wheat and half white to give them a choice. Most kids are used to eating whole wheat at home so won’t even question the difference. Toasted with a little margarine and I’m sure they could do a blind fold test and not taste the difference.

To help a little more with the education piece for the kids let them know the following benefits of fiber:

  • No belly aches – Keeps the digestive system clean and running smoothly
  • A full tummy is a happy tummy – Makes them feel fuller longer so less unhealthy snacking
  • Being health at a young age can prevent us from being sick when older – Prevents certain cancers, diabetes, heart disease, and digestive disorders

  1. I only eat white bread if it’s my mother’s homemade bread. Thanks for this post, Kristin. It does take time to adjust to new foods/tastes.
